PNF Stretching

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is an advanced stretching technique used to increase elasticity within the muscle, helping to improve flexibility and range of movement. PNF stretching is recommended for people who may have limited movement following an injury, or for people who would like to improve their general flexibility.

How Does It Work?

There are multiple types pf PNF stretching, all of which involve stretching and contracting a specific muscle group to lengthen the muscle. As the muscles and tendons are being stretched, they are also contracted at an elongated length, this decreases the pain that is sensed when the muscle is on a full stretch. This occurs by activating the Golgi Tendon Organs (GTO), which are sensory receptors within the tendons. As these are activated, they help to block out nociceptors, which are the bad painful stimuli, when the contraction is taking place.
